Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Pierluigi Marzorati
Pierluigi Marzorati (born September 12, 1952 in Figino Serenza) is a basketball player from Italy, who won the silver medal with his national team at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Yugoslavia turned out to be too strong for Italy in the final: the match ended 77-86.
He eventually played 278 matches for Italian national team scoring 2209 points. He won 1983 European Championship and three bronze medals at the Eurobasket 1971, Eurobasket 1975 and Eurobasket 1985.
He is considered one of the best points guards of all time in Europe.

He was one of the key players of the Pallacanestro Cantù team (which he played for from 1969 to 1991), winning 2 Italian league titles (in 1975 and 1981), 2 European Basketball Champions' Cups (in 1982 and 1983), 4 Korac Cups (in 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1991), 2 Intercontinental Cups (in 1975 and 1982) and 4 Cup Winners' Cups (in 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1981).
He first announced his retirement in 1991 after playing his whole career for Pallacanestro Cantù. He became a vice-president for the club and served in that capacity until 1996.
In July 2006 he decided, aged 54, to come back to top class competitions with Pallacanestro Cantù for the 70th anniversary of the team. On October 6, 2006, he finally appeared in an official match for Cantù, playing two minutes in Serie A league match against national champions Benetton Treviso, then won 70-69. This way, he became the first basketball player in history to have played official matches in five different decades, as well as the oldest professional basketball player to have ever taken part in an official match.
In 2007, he was enshrined in the FIBA Hall of Fame, and in 2008 Marzorati chosen as one of 50 Greatest Euroleague Contributors.

Rules Corner: Double Dribble Statistics ~ Case & Registration:
"... Player A brings the ball up the court while dribbling. The player dribbles the ball inadvertently into his shoe. He recovers the ball that is now still on the court. He picks the ball back up and begins dribbling.
Violation ? No violation has taken place because possession has been lost ? Turnover ? Unforced ? ..."
Rule's Fundamental= Player control has ended but he cannot start dribbling again if he holds the ball. Now, if he starts dribbling again without grabbing the ball, that is okay.
eBA Statistical Registration= Double Dribble and a Personal Unforced Turnover.
The eBA Statistical Registration is included in the Encyclopedia eBA - Case Studies.

Statistician's Digest: Rebound Rate Formula & the Rebounder Teammates
"...We received the Rebound Rate Formula at the last exposition of the current eBA Basketball Statistics Registration Course... Now, I don't succeed to see where this method make correspondent and compatible with the quality of the rebounder teammates... ...
Rebound Rate doesn't report for the degree of excellence of a player's teammates. It is just the percentage of rebounds the player catched out of those accessible for him -- it does not take into consideration who you were contending for these rebounds. That player teammates certainly have an effect upon that value, but the formula doesn't tell us how statistically significant it is.

Basketball Players: Happy Birthday Kobe Bryant !
Kobe Bean Bryant ( born August 23, 1978 (1978-08-23) ) is an American All-Star shooting guard who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. Bryant is the only son of former Philadelphia 76ers player and former Los Angeles Sparks head coach Joe "Jellybean" Bryant. His parents named him after the famous beef of Kobe, Japan, which they saw on a restaurant menu.
Bryant and then-teammate Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships from 2000 to 2002. Since O'Neal's departure following the 2003–04 season, Bryant has become the cornerstone of the Lakers franchise, and was the NBA's leading scorer during the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons.
In 2006, Bryant scored a career high 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, the second highest number of points scored in NBA history.
He was awarded the season's MVP in the 2007–08 NBA season after leading his team to the 2008 NBA Finals as the first seed in the Western Conference.

Statistician's Digest: About the Individual Rebounding Percentage
The Individual Rebounding Percentage (Reb%) is similar to the team Reb% formula, except that we account for playing time. Since all missed shots must be rebounded by the offense or defense (or at least they're credited to one of the teams), we can measure how effective a player is at rebounding by comparing his rebound total to the number of shots missed while he's on the court.
Off% = Offensive Rebounds / ( Playing Time *
( Team’s Offensive Rebounds + Opponent’s Defensive Rebounds ))
Def% = Defensive Rebounds / ( Playing Time *
( Team’s Defensive Rebounds + Opponent’s Offensive Rebounds ))
Reb% = Total Rebounds / ( Playing Time *
( Team’s Total Rebounds + Opponent’s Total Rebounds ))
We mulitply the number of rebounds in the game times the percentage of the game that the player was on the court to arrive at an estimate of how many missed shots were available to a player to rebound. The percentage of those available rebounds that he actually catches is his rebound percentage.

Basketball 2008 Olympic Games: The Battle of the 9 Gates
Still Enchanted by Beijing we remember today this video from May 2007, when Nike China and DMG (Dynamic Marketing Group), China’s largest independent advertising agency, organized an epic street ball tournaments to unearth the best young ballers in Beijing.
Held over three intense days, only the most Baqi of ballers made it to the final inside the walls of the Forbidden City. Preliminary games were played around the Forbidden City gates, hence the title of the tournament, 'The Battle of the 9 Gates'.
Inspiration was drawn from the capital's imperial heritage, street ball culture and the arrogant Baqi style of Beijing basketball. The campaign incorporated multi-media spanning from recruitment drives to artist-collaborations, music, videos, and post-final celebrations.

One-on-one: "We walked this far" with Yao Ming
"I am disappointed that China lost to Lithuania and missed out on the semi-finals at the Beijing Games but also I believe that the national team had played better basketball than ever before." Yao Ming said.
"I am glad, although I have regrets. Lithuania pressured us into making missing a lot of shots. Lithuania played very well. We didn't play well."
"It's unfortunate that we didn't make it to the semi-finals. We had not made it that far and reached the aim of breaking China record."

"We were determined to fight, I think that through our courage, we walked this far but we were limited by our capabilities."
"I was the flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony and did have some good moments in all of the games, including wins over Angola and Germany."
"I totally enjoyed the Olympic experience," he said. "I have been able to compete with great players and teams."
"At least we have closed the gap a little bit, we have lifted our competence." Yao concluded.
