Goaltending.
A violation
that occurs when a player interferes with a shot while the ball is on its downward flight arc toward the basket after having touched the backboard, - and has a chance of
going in the basket - pins it against the backboard
or touches it while it is in an imaginary cylinder above the rim; may be committed by either an offensive or defensive player.
If committed by an defensive player, the shot
counts. If committed by an offense player, it is a violation and the ball is awarded to the
opposing team for a throw-in. In
International play however, a defensive player is allowed to knock
the ball away from the basket once it has
touched the rim.
