Fatherhood: Rising to the Ultimate Challenge. N. Chiles & Etan Thomas

Fatherhood: Rising to the Ultimate Challenge By Nick Chiles and Etan Thomas
NBA player, poet, children's advocate, and devoted dad Thomas speaks about the importance of children.
He brings together revered professional athletes and coaches, actors and
artists, politicians and faith leaders to weigh in on the importance of being a father in our nation.
This new book by NBA veteran Etan Thomas and Nick Chiles, isn't just about the beauty of being a dad. The writers also attack head-on fatherless in our community. Check out this
heartbreaking story from Derrick Coleman, who, in his 40, still longs to meet his father and vows never to be the deadbeat, invisible father his dad was in his life.
"... It’s just like that old saying, the man with no shoes didn’t know how good he had it until he saw the man with no feet. I want readers to come away from this book believing
that you can be whatever you want to be even if you come from a situation that isn’t favorable. If you don’t have a father in your home or things are tough, you can still choose to
make the right decisions that are beneficial to your entire life. Break the cycle. These are men who have done just that. President Obama came from a single-parent household.
He didn’t know his father. And now he is the President of the United States. If he can do that, anything is possible. You don’t have to be a statistic. ..." Etan Thomas

cause, I continue to study the key psychosocial variables that have the most impact on student athletes, coaches, and parents.
My findings, tips, and insights are designed to be easily
understood and immediately implemented when critical situations arise. I place a strong emphasis on life skills development through sports, and encourage all athletes to use the sport
experience as a vehicle for success in life!
In order to do this, I teach athletes to identify and use athletic transferable skills, as well as how to lead healthy lives through safe

Trading ‘Small Forward’ for ‘Scoring Rebounder’ by Rob Mahoney
Friday, 27 April 2012
"... Using topological data analysis, Alagappan was able to map out a similarity network for N.B.A. players, and in the process identified 13 positions to replace the traditional five. The foundation of Alagappan’s thinking is sound: traditional positions may be convenient and familiar, but the players grouped as power forwards or shooting guards have become so diverse that the terms themselves have lost all meaning.
Restricting players by putting them in one of five ambiguous classifications does not serve much practical purpose, and in an effort to present a positional model that would be of more use to those who assemble or analyze N.B.A. teams, Alagappan proposed the following 13 designations – to which players were assigned through a mathematical filtering of per-minute production:... ..."

Black Men Can't Shoot By Scott N. Brooks
Black Men Can’t Shoot provides an ethnographic account of the lives of
two young black men—Ray and Jermaine—as they work to become “known” as great
ball players, and the implications of their doing so for their life chances.
The book is based on field research Professor Brooks conducted in Philadelphia, as a coach, mentor
and friend, over a four-year period.
It is a clearly written, accessible and compelling
sociological story about social networks, opportunity structures, and the setbacks and
successes that characterize adolescence, perhaps especially urban adolescence.
BMCS is
a very good book.

Let me Take a Shot by Giving My All-NBA First Team by George Eddy
Monday, 23 April 2012
eBA Magazine: NBA Basketball & Free Comments
"... Let me take a shot at beating my US colleagues to the punch you my All-NBA First Team long before the official voting and announcement.
At point guard, the man that took the lowly and often laughable Los Angeles Clippers from the bottom to the top of the pack in one season, Chris Paul! He's 5'11" and provides whirlwind speed, amazing passing, clutch shooting and exemplary leadership both on and off the court.
Big things sometimes come in small packages even in basketball.
Improving the Clips from a team winning only 39 percent to one winning 63 percent since his arrival is all you really need to know. His closest competition comes from his boyhood idol and good friend, Tony Parker, who has been anointed by Greg Popovich AND Tim Duncan as the incredible Spurs' best player and number one option this season. ..."
Gritty defense and rebounding are the backbone of Sampson's teams. His philosophy is "letting defense be our foundation and playing from that end of the floor." On the other end of the
floor he uses a mixture of a simple 1-3-1 motion offense and set plays.
"... It's important for any coach to have a philosophy. You have to understand what you are and what you're trying to accomplish. It's like winning: We all want to win the game, but
sometimes coaches aren't sure how they want to win.
They have great respect for the each other. We've always had great team chemistry; it's very much a family-type atmosphere, and our kids compete their tails off. That's something we've
always taken a lot of pride in.
I've always believed that fatigue is the universal language for losers. We never want our kids to succumb to fatigue. That's why we work so hard ..." Sampson says.

The Basketball Possession Scoring Record System Concept & Stats
Friday, 20 April 2012
"... This system sees by getting an offensive rebound, this keep alive its opportunity to score rather than producing another chance. Registering in this way, possessions are same number for both teams in a game.
At the same time as each team has the same 40 / 48 minutes in a game to outpoint its opponent., each team has the same approximately 85 (in 40 minutes) / 100 (in 48 minutes) possessions in a game to outpoint its opponent. ..."

The Butler Way: The Best of Butler Basketball by David Woods with Foreword by Clark Kellogg
The Butler Way is a term used since the 2006-07 men's NCAA college basketball season by broadcasters and sportswriters nationwide to describe the governing philosophy of the
Butler Bulldogs, one of the most successful mid-major programs. The Butler Way demands commitment, denies selfishness and accepts reality, yet seeks constant improvement while promoting the good of the team above self.
The Butler Way was originally forged by Butler University's legendary coach and administrator, Tony Hinkle.
Butler Bulldogs' Athletic Director Barry Collier is often credited with resurrecting the term and its underlying attitude during his time as the Butler University Men's Basketball
coach from 1989 through 2000.

What the "Stat Gurus" Say Does NOT Correspond with Reality
Friday, 13 April 2012
"... "Stat gurus" generally do not believe in the value of shot creation; they just crunch numbers and note how many shots a player takes and how many shots that player makes, regardless of whether the player is a one dimensional big man who only dunks the ball or the player is a multi-faceted wing player who breaks down the opposing defense by attracting one or more extra defenders.
The sad reality is that far too many "stat gurus" are not conducting scientific research to figure out who are really the best players in the NBA; they are producing proprietary numbers that enable them to sell books and/or to write articles for big name magazines and websites. ..."

The Best-Laid Plans of a High School Basketball CEO: A Coach's Guide to Seeking & Securing, Building & Maintaining a Successful Program By Matt Kramer and Randy Montgomery
Randy and Matt have put together a great book for building a high school basketball program.

but also for coaches of all sports and all leaders of young people.
This book is a great source of information for any coach
or interested reader about how to properly run a basketball program and lead young people. I personally have observed
many of the ideas in this book, especially during Randy's career. In my years of high school and professional sports, I have not found a better blueprint for success than that which
is presented in The Best-Laid Plans of a High School Basketball CEO.
Randy and Matt Kramer have put together a great tool for design and example in how to lead a high school basketball program from top to bottom.
