MJ vs. KB? Here it is from the man who would know best.
"... Michael was more charismatic and gregarious than Kobe. He loved hanging out with his teammates and security guards, playing cards,
smoking cigars, and joking around,
Kobe is different. He was reserved as a teenager, in part because he was younger than the other
players and hadn't developed strong social
skills in college.
When Kobe first joined the Lakers, he avoided fraternizing with his teammates. But his inclination to keep to himself
shifted as he grew older. Increasingly, Kobe put more energy into getting to know the other players, especially when the team was on the road.
Michael was a tougher, more intimidating defender. He could break through virtually any screen and shut down almost any player with his
intense, laser-focused style of defense," said Jackson, who coached Jordan to six championships and Bryant to five.
Kobe has learned a lot from studying Michael's tricks, and we often used him as our secret weapon on defense when we needed to turn the
direction of a game. In general, Kobe tends to rely more heavily on his flexibility and craftiness, but he takes a lot of gambles on defense
and sometimes pays the price. ......

“I’ve been asked what I was looking for in a head coach. As a first priority, I wanted a head coach with documented
success as a head coach, at the Division I level, with experience at the Division I level at the level at which we aspire to compete.
That’s to be a nationally relevant program in men’s basketball.
“I wanted someone who understood Creighton, who understood the Missouri Valley Conference, who understood the Midwest, and who understood what it
was to be the head coach of a major college basketball program in this country.
“I wanted someone with great passion for the game. Great intelligence in teaching the game, and great character. And great character was of critical
importance to me.
“I wanted someone who was a great family man, and understood the emotions that these young men and their parents feel. I know how much Greg
loves his wife, Theresa, and his kids, Nick, Doug and Sydney, and that was very important to me.
“I wanted someone who was a great teacher and who had demonstrated the ability to develop players individually or as a group.
“And I am confident as you get to know coach Greg McDermott, you will see that he is an absolutely perfect fit for that vision.” Creighton Director of Athletics Bruce Rasmussen

system you, the coach, create. These practical ideas can be taken and installed and produce results right away. They are the "little things" the great teams do that make the difference.

"Over the year since we've opened this building, the coverage that the
university has gotten is unbelievable, and it's well deserved," said
UTA athletic director Jim Baker. "Anything national just puts the
spotlight on us."
This week, that national spotlight singled out head
coach Scott Cross, who was named by Forbes magazine as one of the top
ten coaches at the mid-major level.
"I was humbled and grateful to be included with those great coaches,"
Cross said. "Obviously, it's a tribute to my staff and the players that
we've had, because — bottom line — you have to have a great staff;
you've got to have great players in order to win basketball games."
"I think its just a tribute to what Scott has done over his years
here," Baker added. "Nothing surprises me with that, and it's something
that's well deserved."

There is only one writer on the planet who possesses enough basketball knowledge and passion to write the definitive book on the NBA... more to the point, he's the only
one crazy enough to try to pull it off...
From the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all
time, Simmons opens-and then closes, once and for all-every major pro basketball debate, once and for all-every major pro basketball debate.
Bill Simmons, the from-the-womb hoops addict known to millions as ESPN.com's Sports Guy, is that writer. And The Book of Basketball is that book.
Nowhere in the roundball universe will you find another single volume that covers as much in such depth as this wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining look at the past, present, and future of pro basketball.
He takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons's one-of-a-kind, five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball.
And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball.
Comprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), The Book of Basketball offers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game's finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler.

"... You are standing in the Baylor Bears locker room before a recent
game. This might be the loudest locker room in sports. A high-tech
speaker system blares hip-hop — “I Did It For My Dawgs,” by DJ Khaled,
“I’m Different,” by 2 Chainz — and it’s so loud you have to lean in if
you want to hear anyone talking (Coaches put clean versions of the
songs on their pre-game playlist, not explicit versions. This is still
a Baptist school, after all). This is so much a part of this team’s
identity that they bring their speaker system to road games.
The philosophy of how Baylor treats its players is borne right out of
Drew’s personality: Be positive. Nurture these kids, don’t tear them
down. ..." Reid

Andrew Grantz has taken elements of two very popular offenses, the Read and React and the Dribble Drive Motion, and made them into his own system - The Attack and React Offense.
This offense will allow you to teach players how to play basketball and not just how to run set plays. There are so many different options and phases that you can pick and choose
what you need to exploit your team's strengths and hide your team's weaknesses.
In this DVD, Coach Grantz introduces 16 different phases of the offense, starting with the most basic, and shows how you how you can successfully use as many or as few as you need.
Using whiteboard diagrams and on-the-court demonstrations, each phase is broken down into a specific reaction that builds on another phase.

Wisdom From The Hardwood By Jerry Walls
With a foreword written by Bob Knight, one of college basketball’s most successful coaches, a new book takes an in-depth look at the psychology of the game as it involves
competition, winning, and excellence. Wisdom from the Hardwood, by Jerry L. Walls, explains why for some fans, basketball is far more than a game–it is virtually a religious
experience. “For many people the game easily resonates with some of the deepest and most meaningful experiences of life,” says Walls.
Walls’ focus in the book is not the game itself but what can be taken from it and applied to life. “He uses the thoughts and actions of players and coaches to show how one can
develop a winning attitude toward life,” says Knight. The book also demonstrates how people can deal with obstacles and overcome disappointments. Walls “does a terrific job” in
showing that basketball can teach us a great deal “relative to success in our own lives,” Knight adds.
“Many great basketball players and coaches are what I would call natural philosophers,” Walls writes. “Their accomplishments on the hardwood have instilled in them an instinctive
understanding of the nature of excellence and what it takes to achieve it.”

"... Coach Schmidt is a great recruiter who has had a tremendous amount of success in the Midwest and has even branched out to find players in the South.
He has graduated players to
high-major conferences including the Big Ten, Big East, SEC and ACC.
Many of his players have found success at the mid-major level over the years including in the MAC.
During his career he has coached 15 All-Americans and three National Player of the Year Award winners. Sophomore John Taylor, a guard from the west side of Chicago, has a great chance
to be his fourth.
I could tell you a lot of stories that would outline the above mentioned blueprint in words, knowing that the mark of a great coach is more than just about wins and losses; but,
I also know that coaching at a high level is a bottom-line business and winning championships is the difference between good and great.
Coach Schmidt is married to the game. ..." Jared Field in

Why is it so hard to get teams to perform up to their potential?
How can people work more effectively together on teams?
Why does conflict happen even when intentions are
aligned--and is that conflict harmful, or can it actually help the group dynamic?
Key business dilemmas such as these, according to Cambridge University professor Mark de Rond,
mimic many of the issues faced on sports teams. Yet the sports metaphors commonly used in business are often trite and superficial comparisons that actually mask the substantial
lessons that managers can learn from the world of high performance athletics.
At once readable and teachable,
'There Is an I in Team' will give managers an understanding of the issues that permeate high performance teams and help them apply those insights
to their own work--giving both manager and team the competitive edge.

"... I decided to write this book as a way to give something back. What I did not want to do in writing it, however, is make it about me.
Instead, I wanted to make it about what I have learned but couched in lessons from others who are far more recognizable.
To be sure, as we go through life, we will all be faced with challenges in our personal and
professional lives.
Unfortunately, for many of us, the only way we will learn to deal with the situation is to progress through it. If the desire to lead pulses through your veins
at all, then I encourage you to become a student of the great leaders that surround you. Do not wait and attempt to muddle your way through a career fraught with difficult situations. ..." Nick Corso

Mike Krzyzewski and Rick Pitino attest to the benefits college basketball coaches glean from the pro level.
Now college and high school coaches can get advice from top NBA coaches in the NBA Coaches Association’s upcoming NBA
Coaches Playbook.
The first of its kind, the playbook offers a collection of proven methods and strategies from the NBA’s elite coaches on maximizing player and team performance.
“Winning basketball was and still is a matter of fundamentals and details, but you also need a tough attitude in order to reach the top,” says Basketball Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson.
In NBA Coaches Playbook, 28 successful coaches offer more than 450 Xs-and-Os diagrams and expertise, including tips from Phil Jackson on the fast break, Tex Winter on the triangle offense, and Pete Carril and Eddie Jordan on the Princeton offense.
Each chapter offers technical teaching points, practice drills, tactical nuances, or game-management tools that provide a coaching edge. The book’s “special plays” section
should be especially popular among coaches seeking the out-of-bounds and last-second plays that work when the game is on the line.

I think being a player and being one who’s not too far removed from being a Division I athlete, I can understand what they’re going through really well.
I think a lot of us when we leave college, we all of a sudden believe that we never took a day off in practice or we started all of our papers three weeks in advance – and that’s not necessarily the case.
So I think being as young as I am can allow me to relate to some of the things that they’re going through and I have a real pulse on exactly what they’re doing on a day-to-day basis. ..." Andy Toole
