Gritty defense and rebounding are the backbone of Sampson's teams. His philosophy is "letting defense be our foundation and playing from that end of the floor." On the other end of the
floor he uses a mixture of a simple 1-3-1 motion offense and set plays.
"... It's important for any coach to have a philosophy. You have to understand what you are and what you're trying to accomplish. It's like winning: We all want to win the game, but
sometimes coaches aren't sure how they want to win.
They have great respect for the each other. We've always had great team chemistry; it's very much a family-type atmosphere, and our kids compete their tails off. That's something we've
always taken a lot of pride in.
I've always believed that fatigue is the universal language for losers. We never want our kids to succumb to fatigue. That's why we work so hard ..." Sampson says.

Recorded live at a youth basketball camp, Kelvin Sampson explains the drills he has used at the college and professional levels to improve his teams offensively and defensively.
These drills will give you and your team a competitive edge come game time.
OFFENSIVE BREAKDOWN DRILLS
The best shooting drills result in your players practicing the shots they will get when running your offense.
In this segment, Coach Sampson installs eight simple set plays, and then explains how to create an appropriate shooting workout for each. These plays are run out of the following sets:
1-4 High
Box
A-Set or Horns
Secondary Break
These drills show your players how to maintain proper spacing on offense while increasing conditioning and improving your players' ability to execute your set plays to perfection.
DEFENSIVE BREAKDOWN DRILLS
Coach Sampson believes the most critical fundamentals on defense are the "close out" and "help-the-helper." These two fundamentals should be drilled in some fashion every day.
After explaining the proper way to "close out," Sampson presents a quick and easy full-court drill that works your entire team at once. Beginning with a 2-on-2 shell defense, Sampson
builds to a 3-on-3 shell that will help your team learn proper defensive stance, lateral movement technique, ball pressure, force sideline, stunt, bump and recover, denial of passing
lanes and help the helper concepts.
INTENSITY DRILLS
Use attitude and intensity to improve your basketball team! Coach Sampson believes there is a huge difference between players that "play hard" and players who "compete."
With high intensity drills in practice, any coach at any level can teach their players to compete at a higher level.
Coach Sampson shows his 5-point rebounding drill which emphasizes rebounding on the offensive and defensive ends while working on block out techniques. Next up is the Speed Lay
Up Drill which serves as a great conditioner and also teaches your players to handle the basketball when the pressure is on.
At the heart of Coach Sampson's philosophy lies the belief that coaches achieve what they emphasize. With both offense and defense, it is the job of the coach to identify the key
fundamentals needed to be successful in any system. Implement Sampson's battle-tested philosophy and drills today!
Kelvin Sampson (born October 5, 1955) is an assistant coach of the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association. He previously was a men's college basketball coach
at Montana Tech (1981–85), Washington State University (1987–94), the University of Oklahoma (1994–2006) and Indiana University (2006–08).
On March 29, 2006 Sampson was named the head coach at Indiana University following the resignation of Mike Davis. Sampson was the 1st Native American coach in the history of the
Hoosier basketball program. Upon taking the reins of the Indiana Hoosiers he noted, "I love my job at Oklahoma and I would not leave OU for any job unless it was a job like Indiana.
My family and I have had 12 great years at Oklahoma, the best years of our life, but Indiana is one of the great programs in college basketball and if they call and offer,
it is a job as a coach that you have to take."
In his first season at Indiana, Sampson led the Hoosiers to a 21-11 record overall and a 34th appearance in the NCAA tournament as a 7th seed in the West. Indiana beat first round
opponent Gonzaga, losing in the second round to eventual Regional Champion UCLA, 54-49.
On March 8, 2008 Sampson was hired in an advisory role by the San Antonio Spurs.
On May 14, 2008 Sampson was hired as assistant coach of the Bucks under Scott Skiles.
Sampson coached the 2004 Under-21 USA national team to a gold medal in Under-21 Tournament of the Americas in Halifax, Nova Scotia, after it posted a 5-0 record. He was an assistant
coach under George Karl for the US national team in the 2002 FIBA World Championship. Sampson was also the head coach of the United States Junior National Team that participated
in the Junior World Games in Athens, Greece, in the summer of 1995.
In the summer of 1994, Sampson was selected to coach at the Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg, Russia. He served as an assistant to former Southern California head coach George Raveling.
The team earned a bronze medal and competed against USA Basketball's Dream Team II following the games. In 1993, Sampson was selected head coach of the West team at the U.S. Olympic
Festival in San Antonio, Texas. His squad won the silver medal.
